How Irrigation System Installation Works - Bloomington, Eden Prairie, MN

At Mr. Rain Irrigation, we follow a proven process to ensure your irrigation system is installed efficiently, cleanly, and with long-term performance in mind. Here’s what you can expect from start to finish:

1. Site Evaluation & Design

We begin with a detailed consultation and site visit to assess your property’s layout, sun exposure, soil type, water pressure, and landscape needs. Based on this, we design a customized irrigation system with zones tailored to your lawn, garden beds, shrubs, and trees. We also factor in slope, drainage, and plant types to ensure optimal water distribution.

2. Utility Locates & Marking

Before digging begins, we contact Gopher State One Call to locate and mark underground utilities like gas, electric, and cable lines. This ensures a safe and code-compliant installation.

3. Trenching & Pipe Installation

We use precision trenching equipment (or a vibratory plow when possible for minimal lawn disruption) to install polyethylene or PVC piping underground. These pipes carry water from your main supply line to each irrigation zone.

4. Valve & Controller Setup

Zone valves are installed and connected to a central manifold. These valves are wired to a smart irrigation controller—typically mounted in your garage or outside—allowing for scheduled, automated watering. We install Wi-Fi-enabled controllers that can be managed from your phone and adjusted based on weather conditions.

5. Sprinkler Head Installation

We install high-efficiency spray heads and rotors in each zone, matched to the area’s water needs. Drip irrigation lines may be used in planting beds or around trees for precision watering.

6. Backflow Prevention

A backflow preventer is installed to protect your drinking water from contamination. This is a required component and is typically located above ground near your main water line.

7. System Testing & Programming

Once everything is in place, we flush the system, check for leaks, fine-tune sprinkler coverage, and program the controller for optimal watering times. We’ll walk you through the system, how to operate it, and how to make adjustments from your phone or controller.

8. Final Walkthrough & Cleanup

We ensure your lawn and landscape are cleaned up and any disturbed areas are repaired as best as possible. We’ll also provide tips on maintenance and seasonal services like spring startups and winterizations.
